Fishing on the Red River

  • A Guide to Healthy Eating of the fish you catch. Fish are an important part of a healthy diet. They are a lean, low-calorie source of protein. Some sport fish caught in the nation's lakes, rivers, oceans, and estuaries, however, may contain chemicals that could pose health risks if these fish are eaten in large amounts. RiverWatch offers some information on this subject, not to discourage you from eating fish, but to help you select and prepare fish that are low in chemical pollutants. (more info)
Winter Recreation on the Red
snow activities

The RiverWatch team would like to remind you to practice safety on the river during the winter, but the team offers these activities:

  • Cross-country ski along the Red River. Several cities provide trails and paths, allowing cross-country skiers to enjoy the scenic beauty of the river as they glide along.
  • Fishing is still a hot topic - even when it's cold out. Ice Fishing is a popular way for fishermen to enjoy some of the Red's 70 species of fish, including channel catfish, northern pike and walleye. On some areas of the Red, ice houses can be seen, but with appropriate application of laws - one can fish from land near the dams, where there is open water.
  • Take a walk and track wildlife. Hike or snowshoe along the river and follow the tracks of wild turkey, deer, raccoons, and squirrels.
  • In rural areas, some people snowmobile along the Red River. Be sure to check local ordinances.
